Lip Lift in Denver, CO

What is a lip lift?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the distance between the upper lip and the nose by removing a small sliver of skin. As we age, the length between our upper lip and nose increases, creating a drawn, tired appearance. A lip lift restores the more youthful proportions of the upper lip.

A lip lift can also help create a fuller upper lip. At a certain point, injectable lip fillers may not give you the results you desire; this is when a lip lift comes in. The surgery results in a full upper lip, without a "ducky” appearance that can occur from lip filler.

Who is a lip lift candidate?

You are a candidate for a lip lift if the area between your upper lip and nose has lengthened, causing a drawn appearance. Age is not necessarily the only factor in considering a lip lift- some people naturally have a longer upper lip. Additionally, you may be a candidate for a lip lift if you desire a full upper lip but haven’t been able to get the results you want with lip filler, are tired of lip fillers, or don’t want to try lip fillers.

You should be overall healthy. It is also important to have realistic expectations and a positive attitude to help you navigate your recovery!

What are the benefits of a lip lift?

A lip lift shortens the distance between the upper lip and the nose, which creates a more youthful appearance. It increases the amount of tooth show. Lip lifts evert the upper lip and increase fullness of the upper lip, naturally. A lip lift decreases the need for lip filler injections.

As an additional benefit, a lip lift is a relatively quick procedure that can be done in the office under local anesthesia.

What is lip lift recovery like?

You will have some swelling and bruising of the upper lip region that will diminish over the first week. Pain is fairly minimal after a lip lift. You stitches will be removed 4-7 days after the surgery. At one week, the incision line can be easily covered with makeup. You can resume your normal activities by 2 weeks.

Lip Lift FAQs

  • To start, no one NEEDS a lip lift! It simply depends on what your goals are.

In patients desiring fuller lips, lip filler can be an effective less invasive option. Additionally, a “lip flip” using neuromodulators can evert the upper lip, similarly to what you would see in a lip lift.

In a patient with an elongated upper lip, there is really no less invasive procedure that can decrease the length of the upper lip outside of a surgical lip lift.

  • The lip lift incision is a curvilinear incision placed under the nose. It is called a “bullhorn” incision because it looks like the horns of a bull. The incision will hide below the shadow of your nose and is easily camouflaged by makeup. The incision can also be treated with CO2 laser to make it even less noticeable.

  • Most herbal supplements should be stopped 2 weeks prior to surgery. Any blood thinner or aspirin will also need to be stopped. You should avoid taking NSAIDs for 7 days prior to surgery.

Supplements like arnica, bromelain, vitamin C, and zinc may be taken prior to surgery, as these can help reduce bruising and swelling.

Pain medication may be prescribed, though discomfort after lip lift is relatively minimal.

Dr. Misch will personally review your medication list prior to surgery and discuss what to and not to take with you directly.

  • Not necessarily. Your upper lip will appear naturally fuller after a lip lift. If you desire an even fuller upper lip, then some lip filler may be added. Most patients find that if they do add lip filler after a lip lift, they will use less lip filler than prior to surgery to get the results they want.
